Research an Allusion

In class on Thursday, Sept. 10 you will create a list, group, label on over 30 allusions that appear in Davita's Harp. An allusion is a reference of a literary or historic event or person. After your group works with the list of allusions to determine your prior knowledge on the terms, each student will select one term to research Thursday night for homework.

You need to find one credible Internet source for your term and bring that to class on Friday to be the expert on that term. We will sign up for terms in class on Thursday. Since the credibility of Wikipedia is debated throughout academia, you need to go beyond Wikipedia for this assignment. In fact, I want you to use one of the school's databases to find a credible source.

The EHS Media Center home page should be the first place you go for any research project in high school. Did you notice the hotlink to the media center's webpage in the last sentence? I will often embed links in blog posts that I want you to investigate.

Some of the databases require passwords, so check out the list below that has user name as U and password as P. Please print off these user names and passwords and tape them to your computer at home. I will only leave them live on the blog for a few days.

After you have found a credible Internet source that provides you with enough information to understand the allusion that you selected in class, please write a two or three sentence paraphrase of the information, basically explaining and defining the term for your classmates.

Type that paraphrase and post it in the comment section of this blog post. Be sure to sign your comment with your first name and last initial--no last names please since EHS's Web 2.0 code of ethics requires first names and last initial only. Your comment should also indicate the source of your information.

Remember that a paraphrase is your own words. If you copy and paste directly from an Internet site, you are not paraphrasing. You could easily be committing plagiarism if you don't document properly with quotation marks. So for this assignment, I want paraphrases only. Beware the CTRL C, CTRL V!

  5. Fascism is a form of government with strong control by a central government. In a fascist government, property is owned privately, but the government controls industry and labor. Citizens lose much of their freedom under this form of government, and opposition to fascist ideas are anxiously extinguished. Eric H.

  9. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was the 32nd president of the US. He was elected during the great depression, and successfully rebounded the economy with his plan called the "new deal". Opinions of him by the public were extreme, many hated him because they felt he gave the government too much power. However many loved him because they felt he was protecting the "common man".

  13. Guernica actually has two definitions. The first is a painting (mural) made by Pablo Picasso created as an antiwar statement. He is originally from Spain. This mural was created out of anger and frustration that Franco and his fascist coup were attacking the newly elected government. The second definition is a place in Spain. Guernica Spain is located on the northern tip of Spain.

  14. Gehennom is a term that I could not find, but when slightly altered, it becomes Gehenna or Gehinnom. Gehenna is referred to as Hell in the Christian religion, and Gehinnom can litteraly be translated from Jewish as "the Valley of Hinnom" and both refer to the same place. From what I read, I can conclude that Gehenna is an endless place that contains fire and brimstone whose figurative "gate" is at the geographic Valley of Hinnom.

  17. Hasidim was part of the Hasidic movement that started in the 1700's. It was created by Rabbi Isreal Baal Shem Tov to make a way of life that stessed the ability (for everyone in the Jewish religion) to grow closer to God in all of their actions, thoughts, and words. It is different from normal Judaism because it really emphasizes the focus on God and the Torah rather than acedemic study. Emily J.

  18. Chanukah is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month, Kislev. Despite the fact that it's not an incredibly religious holiday, Chanukah is the most well-known Jewish holiday today. The holiday was created when a small amount of oil that was only supposed to give light for a day, ended up lasting eight days, hence why Chanukah is celebrated for eight days, and why on each day, a candle is lit on the Menorah. - Emily H.

  22. Baba Yaga is a character from Russian folk stories and literature. She is an old witch who lives in a house that stands on chicken legs, and alternately helps or harms the hero of the tale in question. It depends on how well he carry out her demands.
She is far from a conventional witch, and travels in a huge mortar, pushing herself along with an similarly sized pestle. This in contrast with the broomstick of other witches.

((Quite an amazing character in my opinion))
